What B2B Buyers Actually Ask AI Before Shortlisting

What B2B Buyers Actually Ask AI Before Shortlisting

When a B2B buyer asks AI which agency can get their software brand into an AI vendor shortlist, the assistant re-searches the category label instead of the buyer’s problem.

We captured 17 sub-queries behind that exact prompt in a 7-day snapshot (October 2026, US, four AI engines). 16 of them contain the word “agency”. None mentions price or cost.

Quick answer: AI assistants split a buyer’s question into many near-identical category searches. Then they name the vendors the cited “best agency” lists already name. In our data, one agency was named in 9 of 11 answers. To get onto an AI vendor shortlist, you’ll need checkable third-party proof on the pages AI cites for the category.

The shortlist matters because AI chat is now the top source B2B buyers use to build a software shortlist, ahead of review sites and vendor websites (G2 survey of 1,000+ B2B software buyers, August 2025).

What buyers actually search before they shortlist a vendor

Prompt fan-out is the set of sub-queries an AI assistant runs behind one user question before it writes the answer. Google’s documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a “query fan-out” technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources (Google Search Central, AI features and your website).

The tracked prompt was: “Which agency can help a B2B software brand improve visibility in AI-generated vendor shortlists?”

These are the 17 live sub-queries the engines ran for it, unedited:

  1. “AI visibility” agency B2B software ChatGPT vendor recommendations
  2. “AI search” agency B2B SaaS “citations” GEO
  3. AI search optimization agency B2B software brands ChatGPT Perplexity
  4. GEO agency B2B SaaS AI search ChatGPT vendor recommendations
  5. B2B SaaS AI search visibility agency GEO vendor shortlist ChatGPT recommendations
  6. B2B SaaS AI search visibility agency vendor shortlist GEO agency
  7. B2B SaaS GEO agency generative engine optimization vendor shortlist
  8. B2B software AI search visibility agency GEO answer engine optimization vendor recommendations
  9. B2B software visibility in AI vendor shortlists best agencies
  10. agency B2B SaaS AI search visibility vendor shortlists AI citations GEO agency
  11. agency B2B SaaS improve visibility AI-generated vendor shortlists AI search optimization agency
  12. agency B2B SaaS improve visibility AI-generated vendor shortlists answer engine optimization agency
  13. agency B2B SaaS improve visibility AI-generated vendor shortlists generative engine optimization agency
  14. agency B2B SaaS improve visibility in AI-generated vendor shortlists generative engine optimization agency
  15. agency generative engine optimization B2B SaaS AI search visibility vendor shortlists
  16. how to optimize for AI vendor shortlist inclusion for SaaS
  17. agency criteria for tech brand AI shortlist impact

Which terms the fan-out repeats

Term in the sub-query Sub-queries (of 17)
agency 16
shortlist (any form) 12
SaaS 12
GEO or generative engine optimization 10
AI search 9
answer engine optimization 2
criteria 1
price or cost 0

What the fan-out never asks

Only query 17 asks how to judge an agency. Only query 16 asks how inclusion works.

No sub-query asks about pricing, contract terms, team seniority, or pipeline results. The engine checks which pages describe the category. Then it lets those pages decide who belongs in it.

Which agencies actually get named (and how often)

An AI vendor shortlist is the set of named vendors an AI answer recommends. We measure it by how often each vendor is named across captured answers. Organic rank doesn’t enter it.

Across 11 captured answers to the tracked prompt:

Agency Answers naming it (of 11)
Omniscient Digital 9
Directive 5
Skale 5
NoGood 4
Breaking B2B 4

Omniscient Digital also publishes the most-cited page for this prompt. It’s a GEO agency list that ranks Omniscient first. The overlap between most-cited page and most-named vendor is the clearest pattern in the set.

Being cited isn’t being named

Rampiq pages were cited as a source in 4 of the 11 answers. Rampiq wasn’t named as a recommended vendor in any of them. Across all 71 captured answers to date, Rampiq’s visibility for this prompt is 8.45%, rank 6.

cited as a source ≠ named as a vendor

The engine will quote your page for context and still hand the shortlist to someone else. Track only citations and you’ll miss that gap. You can see the full prompt set we track in the AI visibility prompt library.

The criteria AI answers actually use to judge an agency

GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) are the labels the fan-out uses. It doesn’t search for “SEO agency”.

The cited pages give AI two criteria to repeat.

Third-party authority

Hamster Garage’s guide lists third-party proof, such as case studies, reviews, and directory profiles, among its eight evaluation criteria. A buyer can verify this one in a minute: Rampiq, for example, holds a 5.0/5 rating from 16 Clutch reviews (as of August 2026).

Self-reported case-study metrics

Omniscient Digital’s list cites 81% LLM visibility growth and 140% AI citation growth in 60 days for one client (self-reported, no method published). Answers repeat lifts like these. They aren’t benchmarks.

Pricing signals

Pricing shows up as page-level signals rather than a criterion. Arobis lists a Foundation tier at $2,500/month. Omniscient Digital’s list shows its own engagements starting at $10,000/month. Neither figure came from a fan-out sub-query.

What every “best agency” listicle does instead

A ranked agency list may still earn citations. It just doesn’t show what buyers are trying to decide.

Cited page Format Ranks its own publisher Shows buyer prompt data
Omniscient Digital, GEO agencies list 8-agency listicle with FAQ First No
Hamster Garage, AI visibility agency guide 10-agency guide with pricing tables First No (says it runs 50 prompts per client, publishes none)
Arobis, GEO agency for SaaS Sales page with prompt builder Single-vendor page No

Two more ranked lists among the five most-cited pages put their own publisher or a sister company first. Each is opinion with a comparison table. None publishes the prompt data behind its picks.

What the data means if you want onto the shortlist

The fan-out re-searches the category label. So the pages that decide the shortlist are the ones engines cite for “GEO agency B2B SaaS” and its variants. Your own site is one input. The lists that name you are the others.

Two moves follow:

  • Get named, with a reason, on the third-party pages engines already cite for your category.
  • Publish checkable proof with the method attached, so an answer can repeat it without the “self-reported” caveat.

Then measure both outcomes separately: cited as a source, and named as a vendor. That split is how we track and improve shortlist visibility.

Method and limits

The data covers one tracked prompt, sampled on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews in the US. Sub-queries come from a 7-day capture window in October 2026. Vendor counts come from 11 captured answers. The 8.45% visibility figure covers 71 answers to date.

Treat this as a baseline snapshot. Trend claims need months of the same capture.

FAQ

How do AI assistants build vendor shortlists?

They run several searches behind your question, most of them rewordings of the category label, and read the pages those searches surface. Then they name the vendors those pages agree on. The list is only as broad as the cited pages are.

What questions do buyers ask ChatGPT about vendors?

In the prompt we track, the buyer asks for a recommendation in plain words, naming the industry and the goal. The useful signal sits one layer down, in the sub-queries the assistant generates. Those collapse into category keywords. Match your pages to the category terms as well as the buyer’s phrasing.

Which sources does AI use to pick vendors?

Mostly third-party comparison pages and vendor sites that describe the category clearly. For agency prompts, ranked “best of” lists dominate: four of the five most-cited pages in our data are lists. If you’re absent from those lists, you’re absent from the answer.

How can a brand influence an AI vendor recommendation?

Change what the cited pages say about you, since engines name the vendors their sources agree on. A reasoned mention on a list the engine already cites is the direct lever. Expect a lag: answers shift only as the cited pages shift.
